Bangalore to Mangalore, Udupi & Belman

Update Nov 2025:
* Went by 3A/C Train to Mangalore
* Train was new, so no cockroach. But, better to carry some repellent.

* Stayed in Hotel Surya in Mangalore
* Paid Rs. 1900/- for a triple A/C room for 4 ppl.
        * It had 1 queen bed and 1 single bed. Quite spacious and clean.
Eating: Hotel Taj Mahal is walkable.

* Took Taxi to Belman temple
* Paid Rs. 2000/- (Sedan A/C) for a Round-trip to Belman.
* Drive Name: Naveen (Ph: 9945537747)

Update Nov 2024:
* Went by Non-A/C Sleeper Bus. 
* Lower berth is better than Upper berth.
        * Cockroach in Bus. Take some cockroach killer spray.

* Stayed in Hotel SAS near Padubdiri
* Paid Rs. 1700/- for an A/C double bed for one day, with 2 extra beds.
* The room was neat, but old. Toilet was OK.
        * Ok for daytime stay.
Eating: Vijaya Bhavan hotel is walkable. No Meals though.

* There are Taxis just outside the Hotel.
* Paid Rs. 700/- (Sedan A/C) for a Round-trip to Belman.
* Paid Rs. 1000/- (Sedan A/C) for a Round-trip to Udupi.

Update Nov 2023:
* Went by Non-A/C Sleeper Bus. 
* Lower berth is better than Upper berth.

* Stayed in Hotel Siddharth at Udupi bus stand
* Paid Rs. 1900/- for an A/C double bed for one day, with extra bed.
* The room was big and neat, way better than Mathura comforts.
* Eating: Shanthi Sagar hotel is just below but it had a lot of cockroaches!
* Krishna temple is 5 mins walk from the temple.  

* There are Taxis just outside the Hotel.
* Paid Rs. 1000/- (Sedan A/C) for a Round-trip to Belman. 

Update (Jun 2022):
  • Went by Karwar/Panchaganga Express to UDUPI directly (started: 7 pm; reached: 4:45 am)
    • The train was new, but filled with COCKROACHES!
      • Either avoid train or take Mortein, Lakshmanrekha etc.
    • So, cancelled return ticket and booked through SRS BUS
      • Ghat section was a bit problematic, but, no cockroach trouble
  • Stayed again at Mathura Comforts
    • Paid Rs.1800/- for 2+2 bed A/C room
  • Went to Belman using Innova (Non-A/C).
    • Booked for Rs.1500/- through Ph: 9741845788
    Update (Feb 2020):
    • Went by Karwar Express to UDUPI directly (started: 7:15 pm; reached: 8:15 am)
      • Food options for return journey
        • Picked Idli from VRR Hotel in Udupi railway station. It was good.
        • They also sell food packets at Mangalore Central station, which is decent.
      • NOTE: The train stops only for 1 MINUTE at UDUPI station. Be quick to board!!!
      • While coming back, got down in YESHWANTPUR Station and took OLA.
        • Reached 1 hr before city station and took 1 hr to reach home.
    • Stayed at "Hotel Mathura Comforts" next to Temple parking lot
      • 3+2 beds A/C room costed Rs.1750/- for 24 hrs
      • Room was clean
      • Food in the restaurant was decent
      • Woodlands Restaurant is walkable from Krishna Temple through the car street passage (Check Map)
    • Took Innova A/C to Belman (30 mins)
      • To and fro costed Rs.1500/- from Gayathri Travels (Ph: 99455 11311)
    • Went to City Centre Mall
      • Kids enjoyed Wall climbing 
      • NO DECENT food available in the food court

    Update (Apr 2019):

    • DONT travel in April, May. EXTREMELY hot and humid.
    • DONT take BUS
      • Pick up van from madiwala and longer wait time. Actual departure is very late(around 11pm)
      • Bumpy roads
      • Seabird bus was very bad and never book seat number 1 as there is no leg room
      • Way expensive compared to train ticket sleeper class

    • Hotel Surya was very spacious and clean. 
      • Triple AC room costed Rs.1350/- (24hrs check-in). 
      • All 4 of us could manage in the triple bed.
      • Buses usually come to Jothy Circle, which is 600m from hotel
      • Mall is 600m from hotel too.
      • Restaurant Nisarga just outside the hotel was good. 
        • Take the AC room service as its very hot outside.


    Update (Mar 2018):

    Journey:

    • Bus journey while going was very rough but was ok on the way back. 
    • Returning on the same day was very tedious as the travel involved in reaching udupi and belman from mangalore is also time consuming. 
    • If bus is to be chosen, check out option of travelling till and staying in udupi.
    • TIP: Try train options from Bangalore to Udupi, so that local travel will be less

    Local commute:

    • Call taxi - 0824 60609090 -- Rs 3500 for full day use of Innova AC for upto 250kms.
    • The NH is 'Tolled' now, so, about Rs.80/- for one way toll extra

    Hotel:
    • Stayed in Hotel Srinivas only
    • Double A/C room was Rs.2000/- + Rs. 500 (extra bed) + Rs. 240 (tax) per night
    • It included complimentary breakfast for 3 people
    Temple:

    • Keep a copy of Belman entrance 'Arch' to locate the temple entrance
    • The temple opens in the evening at 6 PM
    • Udupi temple was over-crowded due to some celebration (check udupi website before planning)

    STAY
    - Hotel Srinivas, GHS Road
    -- A/C room costed Rs.2000/- per day
    NOTE: As the room booking was for 24 hrs, we managed to book only one room till night and then booked the other room, which we retained till day 2 evening.

    DAY 1
    Places:
    - Movie (City Centre Mall)
    - Dirt Mania ATV (Tannir Bhavi beach)
    -- Took 3 ATVs (2 person each) and drove the 3 kms range along the beach. The total cost for all came to Rs. 3200/-
    Commute:
    - Walked to the Mall
    - Took OLA from Mall. The same driver waited and picked us back from the beach after 2 hrs. One way costed around Rs. 200/-
    NOTE: There were no Autos near the beach, so it may be prudent to book a cab to go & come back.

    DAY 2
    Places:
    - Belman
    - Udupi + Ammi's house
    - Panambur beach
    -- Beach was good, but, no shade to sit. May be worth taking the tent?! :)
    Commute:
    - Took Tavera A/C from 'Mangalore Taxi' for "10 hrs -  250 kms", which costed Rs.3000/-
    NOTE: There was no driver beta till 10 hrs. So, we did not pay anything extra.

    Update (May 2015):

    Kukke -> Mangalore: 3 hrs by local bus (Available hourly till 5:45 PM)
    [Kukke Stay @ Shreenikethana Lodge on Car Street (just outside Temple)
    The room was OK and rent was Rs.450/- for Non A/C with Bunk Beds.]

    Mangalore -> Belman: 50 kms (1 hr)
    [Go on NH67 till Padubidri and then take right on to SH1 to go to Belman]

    Belman -> Udupi: 40 kms (30 mins)

    Udupi -> Mangalore: 60 kms (1 hr)

    Local Transportation:

    Swift Dzire A/C -- Rs. 1360/- for 8 hrs/80 kms package (additional  - 9 rs/km)
    [Total distance was about 150 KMs]

    Update (Mar 2014):

    Stay:
    Stayed in Shrinivas Hotel - Rs.1600+tax for A/C double room.

    Local Transportation:
    - Car – Similar to Tavera (7+1)...Rs11 per km(A/C) + Rs.200 driver bata. 
    - Driver’s number - 9535319404 ; Call Taxi - 08242424888.

    - Trip to Murudeshwar from Mangalore: ~4 hrs one way by car.

    - Trip to Belman and Udupi: Went by SH67 -  took 1.5 hrs from mangalore to reach Belman.
    •    Instead, go on  EDAPALLY-PANVEL Highway (the one that goes to Udupi) till Padubidri and then take SH1 to reach Belman. TAKE ROUTE PRINT OUT. 
    • Total cost was Rs.2000 +  Rs.200 driver bata.
    Train:
    Point to note about Kannur Express – Two trains get connected (kannur and karwar) at Mangalore. So, both trains appear in the same platform. Kannur coaches were added close to the Engine.

    Update (Jul 2012):
    Stay:
    - Stayed in Hotel Srinivas this time too. The room was slightly better this time.
    - Rs.1200/night for Deluxe A/C room.
    Food Options:
    - Food in the Hotel's restaurant is good.
    - Tried lunch in Mangalore Woodlands. The food was OKish.
    - There is IRCTC VEG catering counter available in Mangalore railway station. Could be used as option for dinner on the day of journey back to Bangalore.
    - There are some VEG restaurants near Belman bus stop.
    Transportation:
    - Xylo - Non A/C -- Rs.2700/- for FULL day (can cover 250 kms) Rs.300/- extra for A/C. Booked through the Hotel itself.

    Update (Jan 2011):
    Bangalore City -> Mangalore Central, by train - started at 9PM and reached next day 8:30AM
    Mangalore Stay: Hotel Srinivas, GHS Road (10 mins from Railway Station) -- A/C Room rent: 1080/24 hrs (incl taxes). Very OKish rooms with lots of mosquitoes. Restaurant in the Hotel was good, but expensive.
    Mangalore -> Belman, by car -- takes about 1 hr (45 kms)
    Udupi -> Mangalore, by car -- takes about 1 hr (60 kms)
    Mangalore Central -> Bangalore City, by train -- started at 7:45PM and reached next day at 7:15AM

    Update (Feb 2010):
    Bangalore -> Udupi, by Sugama Sleeper bus (9 pm Indiranagar --> 7 am Udupi) -- Rs.400/-
    Udupi Stay: Hotel Durga International (10 mins walk from bus stand) -- A/C Room: Rs. 500/
    Udupi -> Belman - Udupi, by car -- Rs. 500/- (Takes about an hour)
    Udupi -> Bangalore, by VRL sleeper bus - better than sugama (10 pm Udupi --> 8 am Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore) -- Rs.400/-
    NOTE:
    GHAT Section never improves. Beware of loosing some body parts in the wild shake!...try to take train whenever possible.

    Old:
    B'lore -> M'lore: 8.5 hrs (by bus).....horrible roads around the GHAT section.
    M'lore -> Udupi: 2 hrs (60 kms)...Frequent private buses are available.
    Udupi -> Belman: Rs.400 round trip by car (30-35kms) - Road is Okish.
